Have you created a website, but despite your best efforts, (almost) no one is visiting it yet? Or have you even paid a lot of money to an agency and the only visits to the site are still yours a month after launching?
If you find yourself in this situation, don’t despair, it’s frustrating but common. But can it be changed?
Happily, it can. It just takes a little work.
In this article, we’ll look at 5 proven tips that have helped me increase traffic to my site, as well as my clients’ sites, and I believe they will work for you as well.
1. Regular content publishing
Particularly if you have a new site, publishing (or at least updating) content regularly is almost a must.
Search algorithms love it when there’s something happening on the site. If nothing is happening on yours, no content is coming up, you need to change that.
There’s a lot of things you can imagine under the word “content”.
You can:
- Write blog articles
- Create a “glossary” of terms in your industry
- Publish data that you have access to through your business and publish it in infographics
- Publish industry case studies
The main thing is to publish.
Making a publishing calendar is then definitely one of the things that can help you fundamentally towards that goal.
2. Target low-competition keywords
.Basically, you can get by with Google and List whisperer. The important thing is to focus on long-tail keywords, which are long phrases that people search for. Because of their length, there isn’t as much content that targets them directly, and this also makes your chances of ranking in search engines better.
For example, if you have a website about creating pages using Elementor, try targeting terms like:
✔️ How to speed up Elementor web
instead
❌ Elementor
You can target general terms as well, however, it is the long and low search terms that you will have the most success with initially.
In the article how to find out the searchability of keywords (free) you can then read how you can target keywords and phrases without having to use any paid tools.
3. Promote your content on social media
Use social media even if your main goal is to generate traffic from search engines. For one thing, it can have an impact on SEO and, more importantly, it will give your content an initial push in the form of first-time traffic.
Publishing content on the net manually is a pain. For me, it sure is. That’s why I highly recommend using some software that allows you to schedule posts to the networks. Personally, I use Publer for this purpose.
You can simply schedule posts to be published to the networks all at once, and then just monitor how the posts are coming out each week (or at a different interval). If you’re not too familiar with social networks yet, you can check out the article Social Networks – How to Think About and Make the Most of Them.
4. List your site in online directories
This tip is especially important for local businesses and businesses. Alternatively, if you want to offer your services specifically within a location. However, anyone can benefit from it.
The basics are to create a listing in Google my Business and Firmy.com. Then also get listed in at least 10 directories, whether local, industry or national (preferably all of them).
Not only can people find your business directly through those directories (for example, in maps), you’ll also get some backlinks and let search engines know that you operate within that location.
It’s an afternoon’s work, and as such, it’s definitely worth it.
5. Start writing and sending the newsletter
I can’t get enough of the newsletter. I believe it is the most effective marketing practice ever. In my article 5 Surprising Reasons to Write a Newsletter, I elaborated a bit on my obsession with this marketing channel.
However, even if you’re skeptical… give it a try. What’s to lose?I also wrote an article about the best tools to use for a newsletter. And with these tools, it’s really not a big deal.
It definitely takes some time and effort to build an initial tribe of subscribers, but once you do, you’ll see why I promote the newsletter so heavily…
Word in conclusion
Promoting a website is a long haul. However, as with most long-term things, you can expect exponential returns.
Nothing will happen for a long time, and then suddenly… traffic to your site will fly down the chimney. If you hang in there.
